About the Project
SSEC was closely involved in the bidding process, providing value engineering on a 150 to 225 foot-wide by one-mile-long meandering flood weir that equaled 50 acres, owned by Anthem United and City of Roseville. SSEC was also recommended by the grading contractors Teichert and Independent Construction, as well as the QSD Scott Thorne.

Project Size
- 500 acres over a ten-year period, including more than 2,000 new family homes. Two creeks surround the project: Winding Creek and Pleasant Grove Creek.
- Phase 1 for 2019 included 162 acres of Hydroseed, Straw mulch and tackifier, over 20 acres of erosion control netting and blanket in creek flood weir. Straw Wattles 28,000 LF, Silt Fence 15,000 LF and 1.2 acres of Geo Fabric.
Challenges
The enormous size of the project was compounded by the tight timeframe when portions were released. This put us right up against winter to protect the project from violations and fines, while completing the flood weir before the creek had winter flow rates. The flood weir needed to be reengineered to our valued engineered recommendations and installation approach. We also needed to mitigate between the owners and the City of Roseville on types of products (blankets and netting), for water flow velocity, longevity of products, and vegetation establishment.
How We Solved It
Being involved in the submittal process was critical to our success. We attended several on-site and off-site meetings with the City of Roseville, Anthem, and with the owners’ representative QSD Scott Thorne. Our recommendations were implemented, saving time and money, while switching from synthetic blankets to all-natural nettings and blankets that are biodegradable. Close contact was kept with all subcontractors working on the job in weekly meetings. Weekend work was necessary to complete the massive exposed site as grading was completed.
